Libraries and online gaming

When I first started to consider which topic I would like to cover in my blog on libraries and technology, gaming immediately came to my mind. Why? Well, my name is Jody Bailey and I am an online gaming addict. There, I've said it. Most people would probably not think I am an online gamer since I don't fit the gamer stereotype of a teenage boy, probably rather geeky. I am a woman, somewhat of a rarity in the online gaming world, but becoming less so, and am far from being a teenager. I have played computer games since they first became available (e.g., I am old enough to remember Pong). I am not, however, old enough to remember the very first computer game, The Cathode-Ray Tube Amusement Device, for which a patent was issued on December 14, 1948 (source: Wikipedia, "History of Computer and Video Games"). When one thinks about the development of modern computers and their origins in the 1940s and 1950s, it becomes clear that gaming and computers have been intimately interwoven since the beginning.

Today, computer and video games are extremely popular among technophiles and techno-neophytes as well. From my own personal experience, I don't know anyone in the former category who does not play some sort of computer or video game, and many in the latter category who are just starting to explore computers (and who are, most likely, older people) are most comfortable starting by playing solitaire. Games are a fun way to pass time, but they can also be so much more. They can be learning tools and powerful entryways to places that many people spurn as "boring," for example, libraries.

Before discussing how mixing gaming and libraries can be of mutual benefit to the general public, it might be useful to consider exactly what is entailed in playing a popular online game, namely World of Warcraft (WoW), developed by Blizzard Entertainment. I chose this game as an example because it is one of the most popular massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs), with more than 8 million subscribers worldwide as of January 11, 2007. I also happen to be one of those subscribers. Simply put, WoW is an online version of the old Dungeons and Dragons dice game, made much more complicated by the number of players and the addition of a rich graphical interface. The goal of the game is to create a character (often referred to as a toon by gamers) that starts at level 1 and, through a series of adventures and battles, to progressively build on the character and his or her abilities until s/he reaches level 70. A complex system of acquiring more powerful armor and weapons is entailed in this progression, and players can choose professions, such as blacksmithing or leatherworking, to craft armor pieces that they can use to barter with other players for goods or services, such as enchanting their armor or weapon. Players can opt to barter directly with one another, or they can use the in-game interface of the Auction House, a WoW version of e-Bay, through which players buy and sell useful items. The game includes a complex economic system that has spilled over into the real-world economy, with entrepreneurs paying people real money to play WoW and collect WoW gold, which the entrepreneurs then sell for real money (a search on Google for the phrase "WoW gold" returned 1,960,000 hits, even though this practice of buying WoW gold outside the game is specifically prohibited by Blizzard's end-user license agreement and can result in account termination). Social interaction is a necessary part of the game, as it is near-to-nigh impossible "to level" a character to 70 without grouping with other players to achieve common goals. These groups have evolved over time into guilds, which are formal groups that players can initiate and manage as they wish. Guilds can become highly structured and "hard-core"; some of them become like jobs in that there are strict attendance policies and other rules, which, if flouted, can lead to one being "kicked" from the guild.

Although this summary of this one MMORPG may seem long, it is only a very brief introduction to WoW, and WoW is only one among dozens of MMORPGs, which is only one subset of hundreds of types of online games.

Another type of online "game" is Second Life (SL) and Teen Second Life (TSL). I don't consider Second Life to be a true game because the developers of SL and TSL do not set goals for the players in this virtual world, who call their online characters avatars; instead, "Second Life is a 3-D virtual world entirely built and owned by its residents" who number almost 2.7 million (source: "Second Life: What is Second Life?") and who control and shape their world. Like WoW, SL and TSL have thriving economies and strong social networks.

How can these online games and social environments serve as learning tools and how can they help "to make libraries a destination and not an afterthought"? (source: Sarah Houghton, as quoted by Rachel Singer Gordon in her presentation at Wayne State University, September 29, 2006, available at http://www.lisp.wayne.edu/) I will address these questions in my next blog entry.

While public libraries have a history of serving patrons' self-improvement and entertainment needs, I cannot support the latter when it comes to computer games being played on public library computers. Computers are a scare resource and patrons often have to wait to even get on one. There is nothing sadder than watching patrons with a real need to use a computer have to wait or tire of waiting and leave because the computers are full of little kids playing computer games.

Those unhappy patrons are sure to support the library--and its tax proposals--in the future. And I can't say I blame them if they don't. I remember when I was younger there was a place to go for such things-- the video arcade.

I think that games in general can be helpful to people learning how to use the computer. I am tutoring an older woman who is at the beginner level on computer usage. To learn mouse dexterity I am having her play minesweeper because it's safe to be click happy on it without messing up the rest of the computer.
I do have to comment on the last person's comment also. The patron use computers at libraries are for all of the public, including kids. They have as much right to do what they want on computers as those who are doing emails, job searches, or research papers. Who are we to say who has more of a right to use the PUBLIC computer, just because we think they may be wasting time. It is first come first serve. It is the library's administration who needs to make rules on time restrictions on computers so that everyone has a chance to use them. Regardless of what that use is, as long as it is within the library's acceptable use policy. Yes, it's sad when a patron leaves before they get a turn. But it is also sad that kids and teens are frowned upon for spending time in the library.

My opinion of online gaming at the library is somewhat mixed. It bums me out that there are kids who come to use the computers only, and never check out any books. Plus, on a warm summer day I look at some of these kids and wonder why they'd rather sit indoors staring at the computer screen instead of going out to enjoy themselves.
On the flip side, at least there are games out there that require thinking and planning (like Runescape) and games do help improve hand-eye coordination. And hey, maybe one day those kids will look up from the screen and realize that there are BOOKS in the library, too! :)

Looking forward to reading more on this topic Jody.

Do people still play Sim City online? To me a game like that or World of Warcraft definitely has a place in the educational curriculum--these games tie together different disciplines such as math, logic and social studies in an enjoyable and addicting format. Frankly, having to multitask through the scenarios and constantly problem solve can give a more realistic picture of skills required in adult life, whether at home or on the job.

As far as the poster who is disturbed about the computer resources being used for gaming, I support having a clearly posted sign-up policy, which could very well include limiting the number of computers as well as time to be used for gaming in both adult and young adult sections of the library.

P.S. A bit off-topic, but http://www.theshiftedlibrarian.com has an amusing post today about a librarian who is using Dance Dance Revolution in some creative ways.

Concerning the comments about Public Library use of computers by the children to play games: The library in my hometown sets aside computers in an area to be used by the kids and a separate area for the adults. They also have a "quiet room" for those that are doing work that must be done without added distractions. This is a small library in a small town so if they can do it, I can't imagine why the bigger libraries can't do it as well?

Second, I was concerned also when my kids were growing up because these video games were their PASSION (but they also played sports, danced, etc.). Well, I didn't need to worry because they developed so many skills with this hobby that all three went into the Computer field in different capacities; network administrator for the Air Force, mangerial, and two can tear down computers and build them back up! Now they are going on to other fields like nursing and criminal justice, but their computer skills will be a bonus to them in those fields as well! So please don't worry so much about this as long as the kids are leading well-rounded lives.

My son's other passion is playing poker and he has turned both hobbies into a website at http://sngmachine.blogspot.com. He plays in many top-dollar tournaments in Las Vegas and was even in the big Millionaire one in Vegas last summer....and missed the final table by only one! He makes thousands of dollars a month with this hobby while finishing his degree online as well.

I think people have to realize its a "whole new world" out there and gaming is just one aspect of it.

Online gaming is very popular today but the lack of resources that is availble to libraries makes it difficult improve in the areas of technology. At this point you may find that computer games in the library may bring in other patrons the lack of computers will definitely bring its own set of problems.
